I recently did a post of Mom & Dad’s grave stone, and put some pictures of some of Dad’s families head stones. Our son Jeff did me one better. He always has enjoyed doing research, and reading books, I guess that is why he has written a couple of books already. Jeff did some poking around on-line trying to find out more about his ancestry. He found out some amazing things I was never aware of, and would love to hear from family if you knew about any of these things. I have a link at the bottom of this blog that you can click on and look at our Waite history. Did you know he was able to trace it back all the way to the year 1800 when in Massachusetts Isaac Waite was born. And did you know we had a Waite that was in the Civil war!! I am sure many of you remember Dad & Mom talking about the days of “Shackhuddle”. Well did you know how it received it’s name. Here is a quote from the article,
“He is buried alone in Shackhuddle Cemetery - the last remaining grave, which is now a part of a private residence. The cemetery was reserved for the settlers in that area who arrived too late in the season to build their log cabins so they assembled a shack and huddled together through that very first winter and thus is was called Shackhuddle”.
When I was in high school I was part of a photography class and we went up to Shackhuddle and took pictures of some of the tombstones. I so wish I still had them. I would love to investigate further and see if I can find out if they are still located there. If clicking on the link’s below does not work just copy and paste them into your browser and that should take you where you need to go.
Here is the link to the web sight, http://www.migenweb.net this will not take you to the Waite history but will show you all the history for anyone you can check out. Here is the link for the history of the Waite’s, http://www.migenweb.net/ottawa/genealogies/settlers/WXYZ/waitei.html
I would love to here from anyone that may have some stories about the Waite family history.
Dale
